UCD law students triumph at 10th National Moot Court Competition

A team from University College Dublin has won the 10th National Moot Court Competition.
UCD Sutherland School of Law duo Caoimhe Gethings and Andrea Whelton emerged as winners after besting their fellow student rivals from Dublin City University.
The 10th annual Moot Court Competition saw over 30 teams from 12 institutions whittle down to just the two teams for the final.
This year's problem revolved around the tort of nervous shock, and required students to prepare written submissions for the plaintiff and defendant.
Students then delivered their oral arguments at the Criminal Courts of Justice on the 16th November.
The final moot was adjudicated by judged by Supreme Court Justice Mr John MacMenamin, Ms Justice Carmel Stewart of the High Court and A&L Goodbody partner Tom Casey.

Host by DCU and sponsored by A&L Goodbody, this year’s competition featured the largest number of competing teams to date.
Four groups, including two from UCD, progressed to the semi-finals before the final show-down between UCD and DCU.
Along with winning the competition as a whole, UCD law student Caoimhe Gethings was also named its best speaker.
The 10th National Moot Court Competition results:
- Winning team: Caoimhe Gethings and Andrea Whelton, UCD.
- Runners-up: Ciara Ramsbottom, Conall Maher and Caoimhe McMahon, DCU.
- Best speaker: Caoimhe Gethings, UCD.
- Best written submissions: Mairead Maguire, Aisling Durey and Andrew Finlay, DCU.
